Practical & Comprehensive Training

Groomingtons Academy was born out of passion for grooming and for helping people to achieve their dreams. Whilst many grooming courses are delivered online for remote learning, we firmly believe in the value of practical, hands-on experience. Therefore, all courses are run by our Head of Grooming, from the Salon in Somerset West.

For anyone who is serious about becoming a dog groomer, laying the right foundation is essential as it not only ensures the best finish on the dog, but will help you grow as a groomer.

The grooming process starts from the moment you meet the dog, and our courses are designed to help you build a lasting and trusting relationship between dog and groomer.

With our on-site, practical courses you will be able confidently become an Assistant Technician or a Pet Groomer, ready to learn more advanced styles over time.

We also offer an initial “taster day” for those who would like to see if dog grooming is for them. The day is run from the salon with our Head of Grooming. For more information, please give us a call.

Level 1 - Bathing Technician

This course will give you the knowledge and skills you need to become a Bathing Technician/Grooming Assistant. It includes:

Safe introduction to the dog at the first meeting.
Temprament assessments for correct handling.
Coat type and condition identification in order to establish appropriate washing and drying technique.
Identify any possible skin concerns and amend shampoo plan if necessary.
Shampoo and conditioning techniques for different coat types and coat conditions.
Ear cleaning.
Different drying techniques for different coat types.
Essential equipment types for different coat types, coat conditions and skin.
Post bathing and drying hygiene practices to ensure the health and safety of all the dogs that visit the salon.
Final assessment and certificate.

Level 2 - Groomer

This course will give you the skills and knowledge you need to be confident Groomer. At the end of this course you will confidently be able to complete low maintenance pet trims from start to finish.

Applicants must have successfully completed the Assistant Technician course with Groomingtons, or apply for an in-salon assessment to ensure the same standard and quality is maintained throughout. The Groomer course includes:

Introduction to scissor skills.
Safe clipper blade handling.
Effective and safe use of attachment combs to ensure a quality finish within a better time frame.
Pet standard styling.
Tail styling.
Ear styling.
Head styling including trimming the fur between the eyes.
Paw finishing including nail trim.
Clipper and scissor maintenance to ensure your tools last longer.
Post grooming hygiene practices to ensure the health and safety of all the dogs that visit the salon.
Post groom record keeping.
Taking bookings and time management.
Final assessment and certificate.

Pricing

All courses are delivered in-person at our salon in Somerset West. This gives students hand-on, practical experience in a professional grooming salon.

We understand that starting a new career can be daunting and expensive. Therefore, we are delighted to offer substantial discounts for those booking Level 1 and 2 courses together. For those who need to travel to get to the salon, discounted self-catering accommodation can be discussed on request.
